Cancelleria di Piazza Umberto I (Piazza Vecchia)
Nella piazza storica del paese, Piazza Umberto I (detta “Piazza Vecchia”) sorgeva la Cancelleria, ovvero il primo ufficio dell’anagrafe. È oggi detta anche Casermetta perché spesso veniva utilizzata dai carabinieri della vicina Stilo, per interrogatori o altre attività giudiziarie.
La cancelleria risale alla fine del 1800 ed era costituita da un solo vano in cui lavorava l’unico impiegato dell’ufficio dello Stato Civile e dove si custodivano i registri, che fino a un decennio prima si trovavano nella parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista Decollato.
L’ingresso è in via Maddalena dove di recente, a seguito del restauro di un edificio adiacente, è venuta alla luce una targa in cui è incisa la scritta Via Municipio.
Sull’affaccio della Cancelleria in Piazza Vecchia, nella ringhiera di ferro del balcone, è incisa una data con una sigla che testimonia l’epoca dell’istituzione: “1893 SGM”, dove la sigla SGM, ricorda il Sindaco Giuseppe Michelotti. Michelotti fu infatti sindaco dal 29 febbraio 1892 al 20 settembre 1895.
Nel 1910 la Cancelleria fu trasferita in un edificio più grande in Piazza Diaz.
Da visitare in Piazza Vecchia anche la farmacia del dottor Giovanni Pisani, dei primi del ‘900, che conserva all’interno preparati medici degli anni ‘40.
The Chancellery – the ancient registry office – was located in the town’s historical square, Piazza Umberto I (called “Piazza Vecchia”, old square). Today, it is also called Casermetta (small police station), as it was often employed by the Carabinieri of the town of Stilo for interrogations or other judicial activities.
The Chancellery dates back to the end of the 19th century, and at the time it comprised a single room, where the only civil register office clerk worked, and which housed the registers that were stored in the San Giovanni Battista Decollato Parish until a decade earlier.
The entrance is located on Via Maddalena, and recently, following the renovations of the adjoining building, a plate with the words Via Municipio was discovered.
On the Chancellery balcony’s iron railing, overlooking Piazza Vecchia, there’s a date with an acronym that refers to its construction time: “1893 SGM”, where SGM are the initials of Mayor Giuseppe Michelotti. Michelotti was Mayor between 29 February 1892 and 20 September 1895.
In 1910, the Chancellery was moved to a bigger building in Piazza Diaz.
Another interesting site in Piazza Vecchia is Dr Giovanni Pisani’s Pharmacy, which dates back to the early 20th century, and preserves medical preparations from the 1940s.
